study guides & useful links

Here are some links to help you in your studies, both in this course and throughout your studies in ELIT and beyond:

Reference Resources
Literature Online (LION) – your Wikipedia substitute
Oxford English Dictionary online (OED)
Glossary of Literary Terms (Cambridge University)

Academic Writing
Plagiarism, what it is, and how to avoid it
Purdue University Online Writing Lab
(A wonderful resource with advice and exercises to help with academic writing, style, grammar, structure, and a whole lot more. Strongly recommended!)

Getting Organised
Bullet Journal – one simple method for keeping yourself (and your notes) organised.
Zotero – store and organise your reading (PDF files) and insert and format references and ‘Works Cited’ lists. A very useful tool! (Mendeley is an alternative system, but I prefer Zotero as it is free and open source, and seems a bit simpler to use.)
Student Survival Skills – a useful series of links to articles on study skills, time management, well-being and self-care, and study tips from lecturers.

Style Guides
These are the best online guides to how to format your essays, how to cite your sources, and how to construct and format your list of works cited or your bibliography.

Modern Languages Association (MLA)
Chicago Manual of Style (CMOS)
Modern Humanities Research Association (MHRA)

(Note that on this course you may use MLA, Chicago, or MHRA referencing styles for your final paper – but it is important to use ONE of these, and to be consistent! I recommend that you use MLA (8th edition) as this is probably (a) the simplest, (b) the one you have learnt, and (c) the most commonly required both in ELIT at Bilkent, and beyond. However, for various reasons academics often have fierce loyalties to one form of referencing or another, and you may find that you develop such loyalties too!)

Online poetry journals and resources
There is a huge number of online resources for reading and studying poetry. Below is a small, personal selection of those I find especially interesting or useful. If you come across a good site you think others would enjoy, please let me know, so I can share it here!

Essays on Poetic Theory – collects famous historical essays about poetry that have greatly influenced the art. The essays are organised chronologically.
Jacket2 – commentary on modern and contemporary poetry and poetics.
The Scores – a journal of (mostly) poetry and (some) prose. Each issue features a ‘Letter to a Young Poet’ by a prominent, experienced poet.
Poem of the Week – a poem introduced each week, along with a short commentary.
Poetry Society Projects – a range of interesting projects run by the Poetry Society, covering everything from football and poetry to ‘Places of Poetry’, and poetry and psychoanalysis.
